ClanCommerce — Invitation Email Redesign

Turning a transactional email into a persuasive one

Role

Product Designer

Industry

B2B SaaS · Unified Commerce

Duration

ClanCommerce (via Scelloo Nigeria)

PROBLEM

ClanCommerce sends an automated invitation email when one business adds another as a customer or supplier on the platform. The existing email was functional but not persuasive — it delivered the invitation without giving the recipient a meaningful reason to act on it. The design was minimal to the point of feeling bare, and feedback from the team lead confirmed it wasn't meeting the standard the product deserved.

The challenge wasn't just making it look better. It was making it work harder — turning a transactional email into something that actually convinces a business owner to join a platform they've never used.

UNDERSTANDING

The recipient of this email is a business owner or decision maker who has been added to ClanCommerce by another business they already have a relationship with. They're not browsing — they've been invited. That context is both an advantage and a pressure point.

The advantage: there's already an existing relationship creating implicit trust.
The pressure point: the email has seconds to justify why they should act now rather than ignore it.

Key questions that shaped the redesign:

  • What does the recipient need to know immediately to feel this is worth their time?

  • What's the one action we need them to take, and is it impossible to miss?

  • Does the email answer "why should I join?" before they have to ask?

The existing design answered none of these clearly enough.

CAPABILITY

This project required thinking across three layers simultaneously:

Persuasion structure — understanding the order in which information should appear to move someone from "what is this?" to "I should join." The redesign follows a deliberate sequence: personalised greeting → clear context → strong CTA above the fold → reasons to believe below it.

Visual hierarchy — knowing when to add and when to remove. The illustrated hero graphics in the intermediate versions added visual weight without adding value. Removing them while keeping the brand pattern maintained personality without clutter.

Constraint-aware design — working within an existing brand system (ClanCommerce's blue palette, typography, and footer structure) while improving the experience. Nothing was redesigned from scratch — everything was refined within what already existed.

RELEVANT PROJECTS

This sits alongside other interface work done at Scelloo across ClanCommerce, MuleEx, and Cloudenly — all B2B products where the design has to serve users with real operational goals, not casual browsing intent.

Related work includes the Cloudenly Help Centre chat interface redesign and the MuleEx Account Setup Success Modal — both of which involved similar thinking around reducing friction and improving clarity at critical moments in the user journey.

PROOF

Before — V1 (implemented)
Plain text layout. Logo, greeting, paragraph copy, CTA button, bullet list, footer. Functional but forgettable. Team lead feedback: bare minimum.

Iteration — V2
Introduced a branded hero section with background pattern, card-based feature layout, and stronger visual hierarchy. Illustrated graphics added to the hero — later identified as a trust and credibility issue for a B2B context.

Final — Refined
Hero section retained the brand pattern, illustrations removed entirely. Single-column feature cards with consistent left-aligned arrows. CTA prominent and above the fold. Persuasion structure corrected — value proposition lands before the ask. Clean, professional, and appropriate for the B2B audience it serves.

The final version is queued for implementation in the next product update cycle.

Key outcome: A recipient opening this email now gets a clear answer to "why should I join?" within the first scroll — without having to hunt for it.
